AIDS is the leading cause of death and lost work days among Asian workers: Independent Commission on AIDSAn independent commission on AIDS has found that AIDS remains the leading cause of death and work days lost among 15-44 year olds in Asia. The findings were released in a report titled "Redefining AIDS in Asia - Crafting an Effective Response" by a commission of nine experts across Asia, led by Dr C. Rangarajan, Chief Economic Adviser to the Prime Minister of India. While the HIV epidemic varies from country to country across Asia, the report highlights shared characteristics of unprotected paid sex, use of contaminated needles and syringes by people who inject drugs, and unprotected sex between men. The commission identified that in Asia the HIV epidemic is mainly driven by men who pay for sex. Their number is estimated to be about 75 million in Asia. The report recommends that business leaders assume a more active role in the response to HIV. The finding that HIV in Asia is driven largely by men who pay for sex indicates an excellent opportunity for the private sector to implement workplace programs that educate workers about HIV prevention, care and support. Support for business responses to HIV and AIDS is available through the APBCA network of Business Coalitions on AIDS. Information is available on the APBCA website.
