Leading hoteliers become Cambodia's first "HIV Smart Hotels"
Cambodia's leading hoteliers will head a new campaign aimed at engaging the hotel and tourism industry in HIV prevention programs. In Siem Reap, the town that hosts one of Asia's most famous tourism destinations, the Angkor Wat Temple, APBCA and CBCA outlined a strategy for providing the tourism industry with education and services that can reduce the risk of HIV infection for the sectors employees. Cambodia has faced the enormous challenge of addressing the region's most serious HIV epidemic; in 1997 HIV affected 3.1% of Cambodians. Today thanks to Government HIV policies and international support this rate has significantly reduced to approximately 0.9%. Cambodia's exciting agreement to join the HIV Smart Hotels campaign follows the hugely successful programs that are currently in place in Thailand and PNG. The HIV Smart Hotels campaign creates opportunities for leading hotels to show the industry and consumers that being a HIV Smart Hotel is good for business. The participation of the top hotels helps to reduce persistent HIV stigma and encourages more businesses to protect their valuable workforce and become "HIV Smart". |
