L'ORÉAL AUSTRALIA CELEBRATES WORLD AIDS DAY BY ANNOUNCING 'HAIRDRESSERS AGAINST AIDS'

L'Oreal

In conjunction with World AIDS Day, L'Oréal Australia announces the official launch of Hairdressers Against AIDS, an international prevention education programme.

"At L'Oréal, we are determined to play an active role in tackling social issues and contributing to the well-being of men and women. As part of the fight against AIDS, we feel it is our duty to be involved in this unique education programme via our professional brands used by our network of hairdressers," said Mark Tucker, Managing Director, L'Oréal Australia.

In 2005, L'Oréal and UNESCO joined forces to fight the spread and impact of HIV/AIDS through Hairdressers Against AIDS. L'Oréal has built on its networks and core competency in education to begin integrating an HIV and AIDS-specific module into all its training programmes. The simple yet ambitious aim of the programme is to improve knowledge and understanding about HIV and AIDS among hairdressing professionals.

"L'Oréal undertakes to mobilise its network of trainers and to use its experience in training professional hairdressers in the service of AIDS prevention. Thanks to an innovative approach, the aim is to bring reliable, simple and useful information on HIV/AIDS to as many people as possible. The initial objective is about human interaction," said Mr Tucker.

Hairdressers Against AIDS promotes awareness through the regular education programmes that L'Oréal professional brands - L'Oréal Professionnel, Redken and Matrix - run internally.

Ms Ozlem Sen, General Manager, L'Oréal Professional Products Division Australia believes, "As an industry we have the chance to really make a difference. We hope that hairdressers around Australia will get behind the project and help to end this global epidemic."

HIV/AIDS has grown into a worldwide epidemic, with an estimated 33.4 million people now living with HIV globally.

Through Hairdressers Against AIDS, L'Oréal reaches out to communicate with its entire professional constituency - trainees, hairdressers and partnering salons, and through them, their clients; in order to help make a significant difference in keeping this global epidemic message alive. The objective is to reach millions of hairdressers and their clients over time.

L'Oréal Australia is also a member of the Asia Pacific Business Coalition on AIDS (APBCA). APBCA was launched in 2006 by former US President, Bill Clinton, and supports the establishment and coordination of country-level business coalitions through out the Asia Pacific region. The APBCA network of business coalitions collaborate to assist companies manage the impact of the HIV epidemic on their business and the communities in which they operate.
