Key Facts

HIV/AIDS has been detected in all provinces in China and follows an atypical pattern, beginning in rural areas before spreading to cities.

Injecting drug users are one of the groups at most risk of contracting HIV/AIDS, with nearly half of those living with HIV/AIDS believed to have been infected while injecting drugs. Studies have shown almost half of injecting drug users have failed to use sterile injecting equipment at some stage.

Half of the new HIV/AIDS infections during 2005 occurred through unprotected sex. As HIV/AIDS spreads from high-risk groups to the general population, migration contributes to the spread of the virus, especially in the presence of high-risk sexual behaviours such as low condom use among those who buy and sell sex.
