< 1,000 [320 - 2,100] Key Facts Since 1989 the number of new HIV infections in Fiji has increased exponentially. The ministry of Health believes there could be as many as 4,000 undiagnosed cases of HIV within Fiji. Unprotected heterosexual sex is the main transmission mode for approximately 85 % of all reported infections, with 7 % passed from mother to child and 5 % through same sex relationships. The high volume of tourists passing through the island is a potential factor for the expansion of the epidemic, as is the number of Fijians involved in the tourism industry and the mobility of ethnic populations across the islands.
