Key Facts

Unprotected heterosexual intercourse is the source of most HIV infections except for the north-east of the country, where injecting drug use is the greatest risk factor for HIV infection.

Women form growing portion of people living with HIV/AIDS, primarily as a result of acquiring the virus from regular partners who were infected during paid sex.

Risk-taking behaviour during paid sex is commonplace in parts of India, with condoms seldom or never used. In urban areas such as Karnataka HIV infection levels among sex workers is as high as 47%.
