3,700 [1,800 - 12,000] Key Facts The majority of the identified HIV infections were in people with clinical illnesses and who are thought to have become HIV positive outside of Lao by engaging in unprotected heterosexual sex. Attention is being focused on new patterns of behaviour that increase the risk of HIV infection, such as injecting drug use, men having sex with men, and internal and external migration. A 2001 survey highlighted "service women" considered to be indirect sex workers, as an at risk group. In the capital city of Vientiane and in Savannakhet, 1 % sex workers were found to be HIV-positive. The presence of STIs such Chlamydia among sex workers is as high as 32%.
