Key Facts

Males represent 86% of AIDS cases and 93.7% of HIV positive people in Malaysia. During 2003, a large portion of AIDS cases (61%) and people living with HIV (76%) acquired their infection through injecting drug use. Among injecting drug users, 71.5% have reported sharing injecting equipment.

HIV infections transmitted through homo/bisexual and heterosexual contacts have increased from 7.4% in 1995 to 13.4% in 2003. Among populations of Female sex workers and STI patients in urban areas HIV prevalence rates are beginning to exceed 5%.
