Key Facts

In the Philippines approximately 85% of HIV transmissions are through unprotected heterosexual intercourse. Those aged 20-39 account for 69% of cumulative reported HIV infections, and of that group 64% are male. Around one third of HIV infections diagnosed have been in returning overseas Filipino workers, predominately involved in seafaring and domestic work. There is a high prevalence of STI among sex workers, yet condom use is not common practice during paid sex. Currently less than 1% of sex workers are infected with HIV.
