Key Facts

Papua New Guinea presents a serious and growing epidemic with three quarters of Oceania's population living with HIV residing in PNG. High rates of STI in urban and rural areas combined with high risk behaviours such as, concurrent sexual partnerships, high rates of transactional sex and very low rates of condom use have resulted in PNG's adult prevalence reaching 1.8% [0.9% - 4.4%] and as high as 3.5% in urban areas. Wide spread physical violence against women is another factor exacerbating the epidemic throughout the region with HIV infection levels of women aged 15-29 being twice as high as men of that age group.
