Key Facts

Although the level of new HIV infections in Thailand continues to drop, a large number of new infections are presenting in groups thought to be at low risk.

One third of new HIV infections in 2005 were married women, most of whom were infected by their husbands. Men who have sex with men remain at high risk of contracting HIV and account for 21% of new HIV infections.

In areas such as Bangkok HIV prevalence among men having sex with men is as high as 28%, suggesting that unsafe sexual practices such as not using condoms is commonplace.

Injecting drug users are another risk group, with 45% of those who attended treatment clinics testing positive for HIV and an average of 35% reportedly using contaminated injecting equipment.
