The stunt announces the arrival of Fiji's Business Coalition on HIV and AIDS, known as BAHA Fiji, and marks a clear message that the business community will play its role in the important issue of HIV and AIDS.

Leading hoteliers become Cambodia's first "HIV Smart Hotels"

Cambodia's leading hoteliers will head a new campaign aimed at engaging the hotel and tourism industry in HIV prevention programs. In Siem Reap, the town that hosts one of Asia's most famous tourism destinations, the Angkor Wat Temple, APBCA and CBCA outlined a strategy for providing the tourism industry with education and services that can reduce the risk of HIV infection for the sectors employees.

PNG BAHA promote workplace access to "PEP" to prevent HIV

PNG BAHA

Post-exposure prophylaxis or "PEP" means taking anti-retroviral medications as soon as possible after exposure to HIV to reduce the chance of HIV infection.

As part of its goal to enable access by all employees to adequate HIV prevention treatment and support services, PNG BAHA is working towards a model which includes a pilot to provide PEP to all non-health sector workplaces. This involves creating BAHA PEP kits and a training curriculum for BAHA company member contacts.

APBCA: Helping Workplaces Stop TB

The World Health Organisation states that TB is also a leading cause of death among people who are infected with HIV. Approximately one-third of the 33.2 million people living with HIV also have TB. Without proper treatment, approximately 90 percent of people living with HIV die within two to three months of contracting TB. A further concern is that in some cases TB is becoming difficult to treat due to the emergence of drug resistant TB strains (multi-drug resistant TB). This poses a serious public health challenge for countries already struggling to meet community health needs. This is also a worrying development for people living with HIV.

The First Business for Millennium Development Summit to be held in Melbourne in October

The Business for Millennium Development Summit will bring together captains of industry and leading international thinkers to discuss current business models and practices, and how Australian businesses can create new opportunities by aligning their enterprises with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The MDGs are eight targets adopted by 189 nations-and signed by 147 heads of state and governments during the UN Millennium Summit in September 2000. By 2015, the international community committed to reach the MDGs by increasing global efforts to alleviate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality and empower women, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, combat HIV and AIDS, malaria and other diseases, ensure environmental sustainability and develop a global partnership for development.

The SLBCH was launched during the 8th International Congress on AIDS in the Asia Pacific, held in Colombo in August 2007. The inaugural chairman of SLBCH is Mr Clive Haswell, CEO of Standard Chartered Bank Sri Lanka. Standard Chartered Bank has played a key role in bringing Sri Lanka's business leaders together to consider their response to the HIV epidemic.

Qantas Hosts Senior Vietnamese Government Delegation Aiming to Involve Business in the National AIDS Response

The HIV epidemic is growing rapidly in Vietnam. According to Vietnam's Ministry of Health, more than 100 people are infected with HIV everyday, with injecting drug users the group most at risk. A key aspect of the Vietnamese government's efforts to combat HIV is to support private sector initiatives for workplace HIV prevention education.

APBCA Case Study: HIV and AIDS Drug Prevention in Indonesia - The Experience of PT Unilever

PT Unilever was one of the first companies in Indonesia to respond to HIV in the workplace and community. The company's concern about the rapid spread of HIV in Jakarta prompted the establishment of its HIV workplace and community program. The program has a strong focus on the link between HIV infection and drug use, as a key mode of HIV transmission in Indonesia is the sharing of contaminated drug injecting equipment. In addition to its workplace and community program, PT Unilever demonstrated its long-term commitment to HIV prevention by becoming one of the Indonesian Business Coalition on AIDS founding members.

AIDS is the leading cause of death and lost work days among Asian workers: Independent Commission on AIDS

An independent commission on AIDS has found that AIDS remains the leading cause of death and work days lost among 15-44 year olds in Asia. The findings were released in a report titled "Redefining AIDS in Asia - Crafting an Effective Response" by a commission of nine experts across Asia, led by Dr C. Rangarajan, Chief Economic Adviser to the Prime Minister of India.

Employees and workplaces across PNG were encouraged to register to "Wear Red" to commemorate World AIDS Day. PNG's business community enthusiastically joined the event - 200 workplaces in PNG registered their participation, as well as a number of schools, including one in Brisbane, Australia.

Indonesia's Vice-President Launches the Indonesian Business Coalition on AIDS (IBCA)

APBCA's Deputy Chairman, Lachlan Murdoch, CEO, Stephen Grant, and Country Coordinator, Taslima Lazarus, with representatives of IBCA's Founding Sponsors at the IBCA launch in Jakarta.

IBCA was formally launched by the Vice President of Indonesia, Jusuf Kallah on December 2, as the key event to commemorate World AIDS day. The seven founding members of IBCA (Chevron, Unilever, Freeport, BP, Sintessa, Gajah Tunggal and Sinemas) were represented on the main stage and publicly thanked by the Indonesian Vice President. IBCA's founding members have committed US$25, 000 per year for three years.

PNG Business Coalition Against HIV and AIDS (PNG BAHA): HIV Workplace Training - Lae, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea

Representatives from Lae's private sector start day 1 of the BAHA HIV Workplace Training.

On October 9-12, 2007, PNG BAHA conducted its second intensive HIV Workplace Training Workshop for representatives of BAHA's sponsor companies, in Lae. Twenty one employees from companies including Steamships, Courts, Ela Motors and Datec spent four days doing an intensive HIV workplace education and training course, which will enable them to support their companies HIV workplace response.
